SESSION OPTIONS
Option 1 - Hold On Tight! Surviving the Roller Coaster Ride of Publishing
Based on her own experiences as an author-illustrator trying to balance her life and dreams through rejections and celebrations for the last 20 years, Angela will discuss the ups and downs of publishing and how to remain patient, stay optimistic, avoid imposter syndrome, maintain your equilibrium, and never give up.
Option 2 - From Holding Onto an Idea to Holding Onto Your Book:
Writing a Picture Book from Start to Finish

You have an idea for a picture book. Now what? Learn how to harness your ideas for fiction and nonfiction picture books to create strong, submittable, and marketable manuscripts. We'll discuss narrowing your focus, making strong word choices, varying formats, considering pagination and page turns, incorporating essential revisions, and including art notes and/or back matter (if any).
Option 3 - Illustrating a Book From Start to Finish
Explore illustrating for the children’s book and educational publishing markets. Learn how to illustrate a book from start to finish, including character development, storyboarding, illustration styles and techniques, dummy preparation, and marketing your talent. Bring your iPads, sketchbook, pencils, favorite medium to color with, and your imagination!
Option 4 - Something Old, Something New: Imagining and Reimagining Ideas that Lead to Publishing Success
When you're ready to write, where do your ideas come from? How long should you work with an idea, or when should you file it away? In this workshop, Angela will discuss how and where to find ideas for fiction and nonfiction children's books, when to invest time in these ideas, when to put them aside for a while, and when to let them go. And for those lucky story ideas that are ready to blossom, Angela will provide suggestions on how to develop them into manuscripts that can make for strong submissions and ultimately successful books.
Option 5 - Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
Having an agent or critique group is not required to break into traditional publishing, however they're both essential elements to making your publishing dreams come true. But how do you find the "right agent" or critique partners? In this workshop, Angela will discuss her experiences submitting to and acquiring agents over the last 20 years, and the mistakes and gains she's made along the way. She'll discuss her strong critique partner relationships and how their feedback and support have made all the difference. She'll explain the importance of teamwork, open communications, honesty, perseverance, and patience, and how finding the right publishing teammates can lead to a
winning season.
